MELBOURNE has always been a town in love with retro. In bars it has been about channelling the fairly recent past. Fifties lampshades, '60s curves, '70s furniture, '80s tunes and '90s excess are all familiar motifs. For barflies it seems that the past is another country, one in which occasionally drinking yourself silly is part of la vida loca, rather than a problem that needs government intervention and condemnation.
