Play Fits Fad With Fifties

CLOTHESWISE, the timing of the season of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll at the Civic Theatre could hardly have been better.

The play is set in the summer of 1954 and that's the period fashion designers have turned to for the women's clothes of next summer.

It's just coincidence that the Freewheels Theatre decision to stage the play coincides with a resurgence of things fifties.

Director Alana Thompson has long wanted to stage the play, which she sees as a great and entertaining piece about male-female relationships in Australia.

The characters include two Queensland canecutters and the Melbourne barmaids with whom they spend their summer lay-offs.

But their 17th summer together is not so idyllic. Times are changing, placing pressures on the relationships.

The play, which runs from tomorrow until Saturday, includes leading Newcastle actors Rod Ansell, Derek Dowding and Claire Williams.
