THE second program in the fascinating documentary series America in The Fifties (SBS, 7.30pm) examines the advent of television and its impact on the American population as consumers and voters.

Madison Avenue guru Rosser Reeves perfected the use of TV for selling everything from cigarettes and headache remedies to presidents.

Richard Nixon was switched on to the amazing new medium's influence, creating slick advertising campaigns to save his political skin.

Media manipulation also became a tool for the CIA as it covered up America's controversial skullduggery in places like Guatemala and Vietnam.
